The calligrapher, Khalil al-Zahawi, was killed outside his house in the New Baghdad district of the city.

It is said that anyone in Iraq who wanted to be considered proficient in Arabic calligraphy had to have his seal of approval.

Analysts say his death will be seen as another attack on culture and learning by insurgent groups and militias in Iraq who have targeted scientists, doctors and academics."

His brother, Hassan Sayed, said he had called the trapped members of his family and they had told him they feared the continuing crossfire between the army and Palestinian fighters of the fringe militant group Fatah Al-Islam.

They installed the squatover toilets - with a buried ceramic bowl - because many of the foreign inmates did not know how to use a regular toilet.

But last night the bosses at Canterbury Prison in Kent were blasted for the decision. An insider said: 'We thought it was a joke.

I could have dug them two holes in the floor for 50p.'

The controversy stems from an April panel called "STDs: Sex, Teens and Drugs." The discussion was dotted with frank talk and provocative comments about sex and drugs.

"I'm going to encourage you to have sex, and I'm going to encourage you to use drugs appropriately," panelist Joel Becker, a Los Angeles clinical psychologist, told the students. "And why I am going to take that position is because you're going to do it anyway."

But the panelists also encouraged the students to be responsible, to be educated and to make good choices.

"This is about thinking about the choices you're making today and how they're going to affect you over the long haul," said Andee Gerhardt, a community-engagement leader with Ernst and Young.

Board president halts excerpts

Boulder High sophomore Daphne White and her mother, Priscilla, complained to the Boulder Valley school board last week about the panel, saying that the high school should not host events that tell students it is OK to use drugs and have sex.

"The panel discussion was a completely irresponsible and dangerous invitation to Boulder High students to have sex and take drugs," Daphne told the board.

At one point, school board president Helayne Jones told Priscilla White to stop reading excerpts from the panel discussion because the language was inappropriate for the meeting.

"But it was at Boulder High School," Priscilla White responded. "If they can listen to it, I think you can listen to it."

Board members agreed some of the language was inappropriate and asked officials to investigate.

School district spokesman Briggs Gamblin said that as a result of the controversy, Boulder High will no longer require students to attend the panel discussions and will more carefully vet the panels. As of now, Gamblin said, the high school intends to continue hosting the panel discussions every spring.

"We think the overall message was one of being positive and healthy in your choices and taking personal responsibility for not making choices until you are ready to make them," Gamblin said.

Conference on World Affairs director Jim Palmer said Boulder High students and a representative from the school choose the topics each year and help choose the panelists.

He said none of the panelists told the students they should or shouldn't use drugs or have sex. Rather, he said, the panelists told students to make decisions that are appropriate for them and to know the consequences.

"When you're talking to high school students about these issues," Palmer said, "I think there is a responsibility on the part of adults to be informed and to be candid." "

AMSTERDAM - Dutch aid to Afghan civilians is falling into the hands of terrorists. Handsaws and batteries distributed by the Dutch have been used in roadside bombs constructed by Taliban fighters, magazine Elsevier reports this week.

As a result, troops in Uruzgan are being ordered not to distribute any more handsaws or radios. The troops at Kamp Holland have also been instructed not to discard batteries until they are completely empty. A spokesperson for the defence department did not want to confirm these reports on Wednesday.

The director of the military intelligence and security service (MIVD), General Pieter Cobelens, said in Elsevier: 'One of the tasks of the MIVD is to warn of the unwanted side effects of the reconstruction mission. But the political and military leadership at the defence department must evaluate whether reconstruction activities should be stopped as a result.'"

NEW YORK -- Six men from New Jersey have been arrested in an alleged terror plot against soldiers at Fort Dix, according to law enforcement sources.

Investigators said the men planned to use automatic rifles to enter Fort Dix and kill as many soldiers as they could at the New Jersey military base. Fort Dix was just one of several military and security locations allegedly scouted by this group, authorities said.

The suspects, identified as Dritan Duka, Eljvir Duka, Shain Duka, Mohamad Shnewer, Derdar Tatar and Agron Abdullahu, have been charged with conspiring to kill U.S. government employees. Separately, the Duka brothers have been charged with being illegal aliens in possession of firearms.

The Dukas, believed to be Islamic radicals, are in the United States illegally, while Shnewer is a U.S. citizen born in Jordan, according to the Justice Department.

BERLIN (AP) - The president of Germany rejected a bid for clemency by the former leader of the far-left Red Army Faction and another member of the terrorist group that was active beginning in the 1970s, his office said Monday.

Former Red Army Faction leader Christian Klar is serving multiple life sentences for involvement in some of the group's most notorious killings. He was convicted of involvement in the murders of chief West German federal prosecutor Siegfried Buback, industrialist Hanns-Martin Schreyer and Dresdner Bank chief Juergen Ponto in 1977, when the Red Army Faction was at its peak.

He has been imprisoned for 24 years and is not eligible for parole until 2009.

The office of President Horst Koehler did not say why he had rejected Klar's bid for early release. Koehler, who met with Klar last week, considered the positions of courts, prosecutors and others, and had held talks with relatives of the victims, his office said.

The request from Klar, 54, had met with fierce opposition from many German conservatives, who argued that a former terrorist who had shown no public remorse did not deserve mercy.

Their stance hardened after he sent a message to a left-wing conference earlier this year that seemed to indicate he had not lost his revolutionary fervor. Klar talked of "completing the defeat" of capitalism "and opening the door for a different future."

Koehler, a conservative, has been considering Klar's bid for clemency as Germany prepares to mark the 30th anniversary of the "German Autumn" of 1977, in which the Red Army Faction left a trail of dead as it fought to bring down a state it viewed as a capitalist oppressor. The terrorist group killed 34 people before declaring itself disbanded in 1998.

Koehler's office added that he also rejected a separate clemency bid from Birgit Hogefeld, another former Red Army Faction member who was convicted of murder in the 1985 bombing of a U.S. Air Force base in Germany, and of attempted murder in a failed attack on Hans Tietmeyer, then a Finance Ministry official, in 1988.

Hogefeld was convicted in 1996 after the judge at her trial said testimony had shown that she lured U.S. Army Spc. Edward Pimental out of a disco near Mainz the night of Aug. 7, 1985, to obtain his military ID. He was later found dead of a shot to the head in nearby woods.

The bombers used Pimental's ID card to get a car packed with more than 500 pounds of explosives onto the Rhine-Main Air Base as people were arriving for work the next morning. Two Americans were killed in the bombing.

Hogefeld is serving a life sentence."

Two Al Qaeda Leaders, Three Terrorists Killed; 39 Detained in Iraq: "Coalition forces identified bodies of two al Qaeda leaders, killed three additional terrorists and nabbed 39 others during operations across Iraq recently, military officials said.

Coalition forces positively identified two more senior al Qaeda in Iraq leaders killed in the May 1 operation west of Taji that left Muharib Abdul Latif dead. One of the terrorists killed during the operation was positively identified as Sabah Hilal al-Shihawi, who reportedly was Latif’s religious advisor.

Another terrorist killed during the raid was Abu Ammar al-Masri. Intelligence reports indicate that he was a foreign fighter facilitating insurgent activity and infrastructure support for al Qaeda in Iraq.

Both terrorists were positively identified by associates at the site. In addition, Shihawi’s identity was positively verified in a photograph.

“We will not wait for these terrorists to strike; we will seek them out,” said Army Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, a Multinational Force Iraq spokesman. “This is what al Qaeda in Iraq members can expect when they target the Iraqi people and security forces that protect them.”"

The blogger, known as Sandmonkey, signed off last week, writing that he had noticed state security agents on his street and heard clicking noises on his phone. 'There has been too much heat around me lately,' he wrote.

In recent months, the Egyptian regime has jailed several bloggers, ending a period in which it had taken a more relaxed attitude towards internal critics. Human rights activists claim the about-turn follows the US administration's decision to relax pressure on Middle Eastern governments to enact democratic reforms.

During Sandmonkey's three years on the internet, his was one of the most widely read Egyptian blogs, popular especially among Western readers for his unconventional opinions about his country and the Middle East. 'Cynical, snarky, pro-US, secular, libertarian, disgruntled' was how he described himself."

HA! About time a State decided to treat these terrorists like terrorists! Who would have thought that Belgium would have been the one to draw the line?

But he was prevented from disembarking by 10 Belgian police, said Majed al-Zeer, director of the London-based Palestinian Return Center and one of the organizers of Saturday's conference on Palestinian refugees.

'What happened on the flight was the humiliation of the Palestinian people,' Al-Zeer told The Associated Press. 'He was not even allowed to go to the toilet.'"

Interesting tidbit of information. I am glad that the llamas being imported to North America are good for more than wool and meat! I think it will be fun to see what else this leads to. I forsee many, many llama farms around strategic points in the world. Better than sheep!

The current issue of The American Legion magazine has an interesting tidbit about how 'an unusual protein found in the blood of llamas has enabled scientists to deveop a quick, simple method for making anibodies that could be used in a new generation of bio sensors that could help detect deliberate environmental contamination, such a bioterrorism.'

According to the article, researchers at the Naval Research Laboratory say that llamas are among certain animals that produce 'heavy chain antibodies' from which 'single-domain antibodies' can be isolated by genetic engineering. Camels and sharks also produce the same antibody but you seldom see either of those in a petting zoo, do you?
