Charlton Heston, Epic Film Star and Voice of N.R.A., Dies at 83 - New York Times: "Never much for socializing , he spent his days either working, exercising, reading (he was fond of biographies) or sketching. An active diarist, he published several accounts of his career, including “The Actor’s Life: Journals 1956-1976.”

In 2003, Mr. Heston was among the recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom awarded by President Bush. In 1997, he was also a recipient of the annual Kennedy Center honors.

Mr. Heston continued working through the 1990s, acting more frequently on television but also in occasional films. His most recent film appearance found him playing a cameo role, in simian makeup, in Tim Burton’s 2001 remake of “Planet of the Apes.”

He had announced in 1999 that he was receiving radiation treatments for prostate cancer.

He had always hated the thought of retirement and once explained his relentless drive as an actor. “You never get it right,” he said in a 1986 interview. “Never once was it the way I imagined it lying awake at 4 o’clock in the morning thinking about it the next day.” His goal remained, he said, “To get it right one time.”"

Most American soldiers in Iraq are on their second or third tour. Soldiers get about a year stateside before returning, so they notice the differences from their last visit, and 2008 is, to most of them, a major improvement over 2005 and 2006.

Despite efforts to clean things up, the Iraqis still have a lot of problems with corruption. Officials in the Ministry (MoD) of Defense seem to get greedier the farther up the food chain they are. Troops complain constantly of MoD officials stealing money for spare parts, fuel, and even ammunition. And a lot of the ammo they do get is ancient junk bought from the Chinese or Russians. These complaints are witnessed, and sent up the U.S. chain of command, by the American training teams assigned to all Iraqi battalions, brigades and divisions. The Iraqi troops have learned that their best hope of getting some help is to complain to their American advisors, and make the complaint seem credible. All these Iraqi corruption complaints to U.S. Army advisors is having some impact. The U.S. Department of Defense is putting pressure on Iraqi MoD officials, and getting U.S. media to do stories on the corruption problem.

Most Iraqi troops want to pacify their country. While many of them are just happy to be employed, those from unruly parts of the country (central Iraq) are eager to shut down the militias, criminal gangs and terrorists cells so their families will be safe, and they'll have something to go home to. Currently, most of the Iraqi army is assigned to central and northern (below the Kurdish controlled areas in the far north) Iraq, although recently over 20,000 cops and soldiers were sent into the southern city of Basra to shut down Shia militias. These troops have done well."

'I also instructed to stop encroachments on state-owned lands and public property and back up the Iraqi police and army forces with 10,000 troops residents of Basra, who volunteered for national duty,' Maliki said. Over 1,000 Basrah men flocked to join the Army just one day after Sadr ordered his Mahdi Army to leave the streets.

The Iraqi Army has also moved troops into the ports of Khour al Zubair and Umm Qasr in Basrah province on April 1. The Iraqi troops replaced the facility protection services guards who are often accused of criminal activities.

I do think it would be nice to celebrate Islamic holidays with movies about Mohammad, just as Christians celebrate Christian holidays with movies about Christ.

Shiite cleric Sadr demanded that the government stopped fighting the militias in Basra and granted his followers an amnesty. As Shiite-versus-Shiite strife spread to other cities in the south and Baghdad the troops commanded by Iraq’s Shiite prime minister Nouri al-Maliki failed to dislodge the militias from their strongholds in Basra, Iraq’s third largest city and main oil port.

DEBKAfile reports: The prime minister may be held accountable for a venture which failed in its mission to loosen the grip of militias belonging to Shiite government parties as well as Sadr. The cohesion of the ruling Shiite bloc has been placed at risk.

From a go-it-alone Iraqi venture on Tuesday, Maliki was reduced by Friday to calling on US and UK forces, which deployed warplanes to bomb militia targets in Basra Friday and Saturday. Both are looking into complaints of civilian casualties.

So, what al Sadr is saying is, "I'll stop active fighting if you stop arresting and killing my fighters." You know that sounds like the truce the US found with the KKK and Nazis. The 60,000 Afghan National Police are less professional and reliable than the army, so it's pretty much up to the local and foreign troops to deal with the Taliban and drug gang combat forces.



The Taliban are increasingly dependent on the drug gangs, and their money, to pay their fighters. Few Taliban gunmen are willing to work for free, and each year, the Taliban has to pay more to get men to grab their guns and join. This is partly due to the high attrition rate. Last year, over 20 percent of those who signed on to work for the Taliban, were killed or badly wounded. The foreign troops have air power and smart bombs, a combination that the Taliban still have not figured out how to deal with. The real enemy is the drug gangs, which are often tribal groups dedicated to getting rich and keeping the government out. "

BROOKLYN (CBS) ― A Brooklyn rabbi is speaking out after a scary encounter with a man accused of snatching his yarmulke off his head.

Rabbi Uria Ohana's crash course on street justice -- and the justice -- system continues.

'I got a call from the district attorney,' Ohana said. 'I'm going to testify in front of the grand jury.'

The case is against 18-year old Ali Hussein, accused of snatching Ohana's yarmulke last week inside a park slope subway station. It was an offense Ohana says he couldn't let pass.

'I decided to chase him to get my yarmulke back,' Ohana said.

Prosecutors haven't classified the incident as a bias crime yet, but a Brooklyn resident who spoke to CBS 2 HD says he's not encouraged by what happened.

'It's unfortunate that these two cultures that don't get along a world away … even here in Brooklyn … are not getting along,' Brooklyn resident Miguel Yazinsky said.

The edict in Urdu language was circulated on behalf of Mufti Zainul Aabideen on Friday night. The one page edict focuses on Talibans’s terrorists’ acts in the area, particularly slaughtering of human beings and suicide attacks.

The edict against the Taliban terror is considered first-ever effort on the part of any religious figure in the last five years. Earlier, the late Maulana Hassan Jan publicly denounced Taliban acts, but he was mysteriously assassinated in retaliation. After the killing of late Maulana Hassan Jan, a large number of Ulema and religious scholars remained reluctant to say anything openly against the Taliban.

Scary is right! With the previous information about the Black Bloc of anarchists, demonstrations are getting to scary to visit, even as a passerby. Hate to get involved even that much.

The accused spy was not looking to steal German secrets, but was trying to identify Sudanese exiles who were holding demonstrations against the Sudanese government. This kind of espionage is becoming increasingly common, as media coverage expands (mainly via the Internet and more TV news channels.) Once foreign governments identify who is organizing, or participating, in these embarrassing actions, there are several things that can be done to deal with it. One old tactic is to see if the demonstrators have kin back home. If so, those family members can be threatened, until their exiled kin quiet down. More extreme measures include threatening the demonstrators with violence, or even killing them.

Another use of this rather different form of espionage is for rebel movements to identify expatriates so they can be solicited (or sometimes just shaken down) for contributions to the cause. These donations often support terrorist operations. Expatriates can also be identified so they can be recruited, for espionage, or terrorism.

Counter-terror organizations are finding that this new form of espionage is growing much faster than the more traditional kind, and is also more dangerous to all involved."
