Diners heard three blasts which sounded like gunshots go off in a toilet at the Giraffe cafe in Exeter city centre as they were having lunch today.

Eyewitnesses said officers had to break down the cubicle door because the 22-year-old refused to come out.

When he emerged, wearing jeans and a dark t-shirt, blood was running down his face and all over his clothes.

He was arrested at the scene and taken to hospital, where he is under armed guard, for treatment to a severely lacerated eye and facial burns. None of the customers or 15 staff at the restaurant was hurt.

There were claims the suspect was a Muslim convert and detectives are now trying to determine whether he has links to Islamic extremism.

Devon and Cornwall police refused to say what offence he was being held on suspicion of but sources close to the inquiry now fear the man was arming a bomb when part of it blew up in his face.

Police revealed that a second device had been found nearby.

Police forensic teams are believed to have recovered one or two canisters of sodium-based home made explosive either from the toilet or outside the restaurant."

Today is a day which we should mark on the calendar and remember for a long time. For on this day, it became abundantly clear that the Iranian-Syrian axis now controls Lebanon through Hezbollah, and Al Qaeda and the Taliban now control the Northwest provinces in Pakistan (see ABC News and the AP story). Both groups of terrorists won through sustained asymmetric (and, in Lebanon, conventional) warfare which eventually collapsed the will of the opposition, which was not supported in any material way by the United States and other nations. I want to concentrate on the events in Lebanon in this post.

Just eight days ago, in an emergency briefing that I helped to arrange on Capitol Hill for Congressional staff, Walid Phares accurately diagnosed the long-term Iranian-Syrian-Hezbollah strategy and forecast the outcome unless forces supporting the Cedars Revolution, specifically the U.S. and the U.N., would quickly mobilize. That didn't happen; I suspect, based on past experience, that the Administration couldn't come to a quick determination on the course of action, with the State Department probably at odds with other elements and the White House unable to build a coherent and forceful counterstrategy in time. As Walid posted below, Hezbollah not only built and runs a private strategic telecom network inside Lebanon, but now, thanks to the "victory treaty," it is capable of moving large numbers of men and material right into southern Lebanon.

Hezbollah's sizable conventional and asymmetric forces are a giant dagger aimed straight at Israel. What's the response? For some time, powerful officials in Washington and elsewhere have whispered about a "Grand Bargain" with Syria, to be concluded with the assistance of other Arab states. Rep. Gary Ackerman, chairman of the U.S. House Middle East subcommittee, concisely described the outlines of that proposal at a Congressional hearing on April 24:

"Many analysts believe that the relationship between Iran and Syria is a purely tactical and transactional one. Implicit in this belief is the idea that if only the United States would make Syria an offer of sufficient size and sweetness, the axis from Tehran to Damascus could be shattered and the Middle East transformed. Syria, in this view, might even join our team.

In exchange for the return of the Golan Heights, and the restoration of its overlordship of Lebanon, Syria would renege on its relationship with Hezbollah, give Hamas the boot, and slam the door shut on Iran. The mullahs would be cut-off from their Lebanese and Palestinian terrorist proxies and isolated completely in the region. The flow of jihadis from Syria would dry up-perhaps in return for a restoration of Saddam’s old largess with Iraq’s oil-and the situation in Iraq would settle down, further isolating Iran from the Arab hinterland. Faced with a united Middle East, the ayatollahs would set their dreams of hegemony and Islamic revolution aside, and give up their nuclear program in exchange for international security guarantees."

Notice the catch: "The restoration of its (Syria's) overlordship of Lebanon." That has now occurred through its proxies in Lebanon."

Recently, there have been local incidents in which military personnel have been verbally assaulted while commuting on the Metro. Uniformed members have been approached by individuals expressing themselves as anti-government, shouting anti-war sentiments, and using racial slurs against minorities.

In one instance, a member was followed onto the platform by an individual who continued to berate her as she exited the metro station. Thus far, these incidents have occurred in the vicinity of the Reagan National Airport and Eisenhower Ave metro stations on the yellow line, however, military members should be vigilant and aware of their surroundings at all times while in mass transit.

Should you be approached by any individuals expressing anti-government/anti-war sentiments, or any other types of direct verbal assault, immediately notify your local police jurisdiction. Dutch Rewrite History To Show Moroccan's As Liberators Of Europe

Since 19 Moroccans died liberating Europe, they are now hailed as Liberators? I think a case can be made to celebrate all the other nations that aided in the Liberation, but to act as if they were primary contributors? This is just a case of including the Muslims over the European locals.

Well as these mosque-married muslim women found themselves in failed marriages and sued for divorce they made the discovery that, according to British law, they have not been married at all! And thus they and their children are NOT entitled to protection under the marriage law and are not eligible for maintenace payments from the wife's 'husband'.

In an effort to stubbornly thumb their noses at British law in an attempt to place Sharia law over British law --these mosques have placed their female members and their children in the position of having lived in a unmarried state with no legal status.

Of course - it is the British taxpayers who will pick up the support payments, housing benefits, etc. that the 'ex'-husband is now free to abstain from paying."

But, perhaps what is most interesting about Bin Laden's latest set of audio recordings is not what they contain--but rather, what they inexplicably lack: the English-language subtitles and matching transcript that have, until recently, been a customary feature of professional-quality As-Sahab videos. An analysis of the history of As-Sahab recordings and their evolution over time would seem to indicate that the responsibility for creating these English-language products fell largely on the shoulders of one man alone: Adam Gadahn (a.k.a. We are already supporting Israel economically, politically and by sharing intelligence and military hardware. In addition, some Israeli Americans with both Israeli and American citizenships serve in the Israeli Armed Forces. Israel never would have to be fearful of any other nation; our great American Armed Forces will protect the common wealth as they would the homeland.

Would it be politically more advantages for the United States to manage the Jewish state as a member of our Common Wealth?

Would it be economically more advantages for Israeli people to be a member of our nation?

The Israeli Common Wealth will be free to exercise the religious freedom that our great nation would offer without being isolated among the hostile Arabs.

Should the Common Wealth include the Arabs who were forced to leave the land when Zionist invaded the land?

Sorry it took a little while to respond. Life keeps me busy sometimes and it is hard to write in depth.

-Making Israel a part of the US as a commonwealth state would not help anyone that I can think of. Since the Muslims and Arabs already hate Israel and the US I do not think making this hate focus onto one entity would be a good thing. Besides, the Jews moved to Israel to have their own land that they can not be chased off of.

-That covers the political and economic questions, too.

- I do not understand what you are saying about the religious freedoms. Israel is based on Judaism, but allows all faiths to be practiced. They have many Christians and Muslims in their territory who are allowed full rights as Israeli citizens.

-Your history is messed up. The Zionists started to return to the land because of the rising Jew-bashing in Europe and the Middle East. For some silly reason the Jews hated being beaten for their faith and decided that it might be time to return to the Promised Land. As they returned, they bought land from the Arabs, both Christian and Muslim, and farmed it. They bought tracts of desert and swamps, or what ever the Arabs would sell. Look at Tel Aviv, which was worthless before the Jews bought it to create the first city for Jews that was not going to be subject to pogroms.
Then the Arabs noticed that the Jews were arriving in ever increasing numbers. The Ottoman Empire fell and the new politics of the area led to the Muslims needing a scape goat for their issues, so they blamed the Jews, just as the Europeans did. Notice that Hitler and the Muslims formed an alliance that kept the Muslims from joining the Allies and sent many units to help fight for the Axis. The Koran says that the Muslims can not trust the Jews who are all liars and thieves who are hated by Allah. The Nazis still are revered in the Arab world for their attempted genocide of the Jews. Some versions of the Koran have the Swastika on them for a reason.
After the Jews helped the British to win WWII, they were promised a homeland. The Europeans wanted to get rid of these people and so the UN was glad to find them a home. Since the Jews had been fleeing to Judea for half a century, and the pace had risen significantly during the 1930s and '40s, the Jews demanded the right to return to the homeland that God had chased them off of centuries before. The Arabs now tried to make it illegal to sell land to Jews or to have Jews for neighbors. Which is also in line with Koranic teachings. The Arabs started to kill Jews for sport and to terrorize them off the lands that they had already bought. Meanwhile, the Jews took the swamps and deserts and converted them into lush gardens and farms. Now the Arabs claimed that the worthless land they had sold before had been forced or tricked by the evil Jews.
The Muslim clerics denounced the Jews and ordered their followers to slaughter them. They did not form armies, yet, but used raiders to enter Jewish villages and kill anyone they could find. They even brought in families to take land and ensure that Muslim land was inhabited so that the British would know who held the previously barren regions. The British needed oil, so they remained neutral on the side of the Muslims. The British Army, with years of combat experience in Europe and Africa, now worked on keeping the Jews disarmed and helpless so that the Arabs would not feel threatened. Jews around the world saw the plight of their coreligionists and sent money, food, arms and other aid, which the British intercepted and kept most of so that the Arabs would see that the power of the Empire was allied with them.
Jews freed from Concentration Camps were trying to get to the Promised Land and freedom. The British kept them out. Finally, the Jews asked the UN to acknowledge them as a legitimate country. The UN votes to separate Israel from the Trans-Jordan and put a King in as the head of Jordan while the Jews get to form their own country and government.
The Arabs are so full of hate at losing this sliver of worthless land, that they immediately form multiple armies to invade the new nation. Fighting had already been happening because of bounties that rich Muslims put on the lives of Jews. To prepare for the invasion, the Arabs ordered their people to get out of the way so that anyone left behind could be slaughtered. The Grand Mufti of Jerusalem even bragged about the size of the upcoming slaughter and told how bloody it would be. However, when the Arab armies invaded, they found that every Jewish village was armed and defended. The years of raids had taught the Jews much about defense and the Arab armies were getting badly beaten. The Jews ended up taking some of the emptied Arab villages so that the Arabs could not use them to conduct further raids against the Jewish settlers. Thousands of innocent farmers and families died at the hands of the attacking Muslims. Thousands of armed and trained Muslims died trying to kill those farmers.
In 1967, the Muslims tried again with better training. This time, the Jews won and then counter-invaded. They took the West Bank from the invading Jordanians and Gaza from the invading Egyptians. Notice that neither country has asked for those lands back. Both countries have used force to keep the people from entering their parent countries. The Jordanians have even used artillery and tanks to force the refugees that tried to get out of the areas the Jews controlled.
These refugees were not fleeing the brutality of the Jews. They had been forced to move into the Trans-Jordan by the Muslim leaders by the promise of land, loot and slaves. They now found themselves on the losing end and feared the legitimate reprisals of the settlers who they had been trying to slaughter. Of course they ran! Their masters in the Muslim countries had failed to slaughter the Jews as promised and those Jews were now trying to take land so that the next, inevitable, invasion came, they would be safe.
That war continues today. Your twisted history of who invaded whom in that area needs some correction. The invasions were Muslims who forced fellow Muslims out of the way so that Jews could be slaughtered.
That means that the Muslim refugees should have been integrated into Muslim countries decades ago. Why do the Israelis and US give so much more to those displaced Muslims than their Muslim brothers?
- If you want to include all "Palestinian" land in your Commonwealth, can you tell where Palestine was? Who was the political leader? What was the currency? How was it formed?
- The only reason that the so-called Two State Solution has not worked is the the Muslims in the region refuse to settle for anything short of the extermination of the Jews, as called for in all the political/religious speeches/literature in the area.
- What are you talking about? "looking at the region as a Federal States with one government elected by all of the people?" Huh?
- I am not sure why you are worried about the Israeli Lobby. I am more worried about why people fear Israel. Why should they? If the Arabs stopped attacking, then the Jews would settle down and return to farming and business. If the Jews laid down their arms, they would be dead in hours.

I think you need to worry less about the Israelis lying to you and more about who is lying about the Israelis.

The White House on Monday sent a scathing letter to NBC News, accusing the news network of “deceptively” editing an interview with President Bush on the issue of appeasement and Iran.

At issue were remarks Bush made in front of Israel's parliament earlier this week.

Specifically, White House counselor Ed Gillespie laments that the network edited the interview in a way that “is clearly intended to give viewers the impression that [Bush] agreed with [correspondent Richard Engel's] characterization of his remarks when he explicitly challenged it.

“This deceitful editing to further a media-manufactured storyline is utterly misleading and irresponsible and I hereby request in the interest of fairness and accuracy that the network air the President’s responses to both initial questions in full on the two programs that used the excerpts,” said Gillespie in the letter to NBC News President Steve Capus.

Gillespie used the opportunity to also inquire whether NBC News still believes that Iraq is in the midst of a civil war. In November 2006, the network decided to label the infighting in the country a “civil war.”

It is not yet clear that enough international consensus exists among the key powers involved in Lebanon — Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia and the United States — for a durable power-sharing agreement.

Meanwhile, many Lebanese agree that the hardening of Sunni-Shiite animosities — reminiscent of the Muslim-Christian fault line during the country’s 15-year civil war — is likely to make any future conflict here more violent.

“The Sunni-Shiite conflict is in the open now, it’s been triggered and operationalized,” said Paul Salem, director of the Carnegie Middle East Center in Beirut. “This is a deep wound, and it’s going to have serious repercussions if it’s not immediately and seriously addressed.”"

Last year, Marines found an abandoned car in the desert and a dead man nearby, plus a second man who was on the brink of death from dehydration. The pair were believed to have been prowling for scrap metal. Similar deaths were reported in Yuma.

The military said most scrappers arrested in the past several years appeared to be either illegal immigrants or drug users looking for easy money. If convicted on federal charges ranging from trespassing to theft, they face up to 20 years in prison.

Because the Twentynine Palms base is so vast, officials cannot erect and maintain fences. Instead, they have posted signs warning against trespassing, only to see those signs stolen for the metal.

Homeland Command officers explained the decision not to activate the siren by the many recent false alarms that kept the population on edge and the wish not to disturb the Bush visit.

The second point is on the northern slopes of the Hermon range. After Hizballah seizes control of this enclave and the Syrian 10th and 14th armored divisions step over the border into Lebanon, the two forces can join to form a strong military line opposite Israel near the Litani River.

Our military sources report that the vanguard of the 10th Division has already moved across to the Lebanese side of the border.

Hizballah’s victory in taking over western and central Beirut therefore has had the effect of adding another link to the pro-Iranian chain encircling Israel. In many ways it is a more damaging setback for Israel’s national security than the Palestinian Hamas' seizure of the Gaza Strip

DEBKAfile reports: In the second winning round of its war on the pro-Western Siniora government, Hizballah pounded the Druze strongholds of anti-Syrian Walid Jumblatt in the Mt. Lebanon hills east of Beirut all day Sunday, April 11. When the Druze leader asked his rival Talal Arselan to broker a truce deal, Hizballah laid down an ultimatum: Druze militias must turn in their heavy weapons to the Lebanese army and disarm their troops or the attacks go on.

In the northern town of Tripoli Hizballah allies continued to fight pro-government Sunni loyalists.

Shiite gunmen continue to man roadblocks on Beirut highways including the airport road even through Hizballah agreed Saturday, May 10, to take its armed men off the streets after the army surrendered to its two key demands.

DEBKAfile’s sources report that Hizballah fighters mingle with Shiite Amal men in order to camouflage their continuing street presence. Lebanese soldiers still do not venture into the districts conquered by Hizballah in four days of fierce fighting. The crisis which has claimed 44 dead and 128 wounded is therefore far from over. Arab League foreign ministers met Sunday in emergency session called by Saudi Arabia and Egypt Sunday night. Damascus, which sent a low-level delegate instead of its foreign minister, vetoed the proposal to send an Arab peacekeeping force to hold Hizballah in check.

Israel’s deputy defense minister Vilnai said the Lebanese situation is worrying but there is no cause for Israel to intervene.

In obedience to Hizballah demands the Lebanese army revoked two government measures Saturday: the Shiite group’s independent telecommunication network will not be shut down and the pro-Hizballah Brig. Gen Wafiq Shqeir would keep his job as Beirut international airport head of security. The general was accused of waving through illegal Iranian arms shipments for Hizballah.

In a broadcast speech, Saturday, May 10, the pro-Western prime minister Fouad Siniora asked the army to defuse the crisis after Hizballah seized control of western Beirut, besieged the government center and attacked pro-government Sunni centers across Lebanon. Government loyalists found no support from Sinora’s powerful backers, the United States, France or even Saudi Arabia and Egypt. The pro-Western government was therefore forced to back down.

This meant its acceptance of Hizballah’s communication system in central, southern and eastern Lebanon and its direct link to Syrian and Iranian command centers in Damascus; and the Shiite group’s Beirut headquarters online communications link to its Revolutionary Guards bosses in Tehran.

Triumphant, the Hizballah chief Hassan Hasrallah will be a more dangerous enemy than ever. The army rather than the government laid down the condition that Hizballah withdraw from the Sunni districts of Beirut and the rest of the country and remove its armed men from the streets.

Even so, a government minister remarked that the deal awaits approval by Hizballah leaders and the Iranian ambassador in Beirut. It is far from certain that the Shiite terrorists will give up the territory they gained in the last four days.
