In former insurgent hotbed of Anbar, where Sunni Arab tribes are fighting al Qaeda alongside US forces, violent deaths have dropped 82 percent. Monday, as these figures were released, bomb blasts in Baghdad and northern Mosul killed five people, while 6 gunmen died in clashes with the police in the Shiite town of Karbala south of Baghdad. And Nineveh province in the north, to which al Qaeda and Sunni insurgents have fled, has seen a 129 percent increase in car bombings and 114 percent increase in deaths."
