DEBKAfile - LAW anti-tank rockets found in Palestinian Shufat camp in Jerusalem: "A joint Israeli military-border police raid of the northern Jerusalem Palestinian district, turned up a large secret weapons cache, Monday, May 5. Seven men were arrested on suspicion of engaging in terrorism and arm trafficking.

DEBKAfile’s military sources report this was Israel’s first large-scale counter-terror operation in the Jerusalem municipal area. Uncovered was a large stock of pistols, hand grenades, stun grenades, ammo and military equipment, as well as LAW anti-tank rockets.

They also note the raid was carried out just as visiting US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was about to hold a trilateral meeting in Jerusalem with prime minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas. Its findings exposed the true state of security in the Israeli capital.

Rice is on her 15th visit to the region in two years in an effort to push Israel-Palestinian peace dialogue forward.

The house-to-house search was preceded by a curfew and encirclement of the targeted Shufat camp, most of whose 10,000 inhabitants have Israeli identity cards with benefits.

The Shufat camp fringes northern Jerusalem’s main transport hub: highways heading north and out to the Dead Sea and the road connections from the French Hill, Pisgat Zeev and Neve Yaacov suburbs to the city center."
