A senior American official in the fight against illegal drugs, John Walters, has accused Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez of being complicit in the trade.

Speaking during a visit to Colombia, Mr Walters said Mr Chavez had failed to root out corrupt officials.

Mr Walters says Venezuela is a haven for drug smuggling.

'You cannot move 200 to 300 metric tonnes of cocaine through Venezuela without having substantial infrastructure that's not hard to find, and nothing is significantly happening,' he said.

'In fact every effort to cooperate has been rejected by the Venezuelan Government under President Chavez.

'He's making Venezuela a haven that's being used to victimise not only this hemisphere, but Europe and Africa.'"
