Defense Department will try out UB's germ-killing BioBlower

I need this new toy! I am not sure what I need it for, but I want one anyway!

The Buffalo News: City & Region: Defense Department will try out UB's germ-killing BioBlower: "For several years, Garvey and Lordi have worked with microbiologists to develop a more effective, cheaper way to kill anthrax, smallpox, severe acute respiratory syndrome and other pathogens.

The BioBlower uses a pump to pull in air at high speed. As it compresses, the air warms. The temperature inside the device rises to more than 400 degrees, incinerating any airborne agents.

Conventional technologies use filters to trap large airborne spores. The approach does not work as well, and the filters have to be regularly replaced and properly discarded, Garvey said. The military invited Buffalo BioBlower to participate in last year’s competition to help the Pentagon decide which new air purifiers to buy.

The technology can be scaled, too, so it can be built for ventilating large buildings and hospitals, or shrunk for use in homes and airplanes."
