Police arrest four in MSU 'terrorism' fire: "More than eight years after a New Year's Eve fire extensively damaged a landmark Michigan State University building, authorities have arrested four people, who police say used 'domestic terrorism' to sabotage a genetic plant research project.

The defendants -- three of whom are from Detroit -- set fire to Agriculture Hall on behalf of the Earth Liberation Front, a loosely organized movement of environmental extremists with a history of destroying property, often by arson, federal authorities said.

ELF has been connected with fires around the country, including several on houses under construction in Metro Detroit.

'The arson … was an act of domestic terrorism, plain and simple,' Charles Gross, U.S. attorney for the Western District of Michigan, said Tuesday at a press conference announcing the indictments. 'There's no two ways about it. The use of violence and the destruction of property to make a political statement cannot be tolerated in a civilized society, regardless of the nationality of the perpetrators or the nature of the cause they espouse.'"
