He said the two men who bought the girls were brothers aged 23 and 25 and that they had been arrested on charges of raping minors.

'What is astonishing about this case is the fact that the two girls were sold with the approval of their mother and the parents of the two men,' Hijo said. 'This incident takes us back to the period of slavery. What is even more shocking is the fact that the two men's mother argued that this was an accepted custom.'"

NEW YORK -- Six men from New Jersey have been arrested in an alleged terror plot against soldiers at Fort Dix, according to law enforcement sources.

Investigators said the men planned to use automatic rifles to enter Fort Dix and kill as many soldiers as they could at the New Jersey military base. Fort Dix was just one of several military and security locations allegedly scouted by this group, authorities said.

The suspects, identified as Dritan Duka, Eljvir Duka, Shain Duka, Mohamad Shnewer, Derdar Tatar and Agron Abdullahu, have been charged with conspiring to kill U.S. government employees. Separately, the Duka brothers have been charged with being illegal aliens in possession of firearms.

The Dukas, believed to be Islamic radicals, are in the United States illegally, while Shnewer is a U.S. citizen born in Jordan, according to the Justice Department.

BERLIN (AP) - The president of Germany rejected a bid for clemency by the former leader of the far-left Red Army Faction and another member of the terrorist group that was active beginning in the 1970s, his office said Monday.

Former Red Army Faction leader Christian Klar is serving multiple life sentences for involvement in some of the group's most notorious killings. He was convicted of involvement in the murders of chief West German federal prosecutor Siegfried Buback, industrialist Hanns-Martin Schreyer and Dresdner Bank chief Juergen Ponto in 1977, when the Red Army Faction was at its peak.

He has been imprisoned for 24 years and is not eligible for parole until 2009.

The office of President Horst Koehler did not say why he had rejected Klar's bid for early release. Koehler, who met with Klar last week, considered the positions of courts, prosecutors and others, and had held talks with relatives of the victims, his office said.

The request from Klar, 54, had met with fierce opposition from many German conservatives, who argued that a former terrorist who had shown no public remorse did not deserve mercy.

Their stance hardened after he sent a message to a left-wing conference earlier this year that seemed to indicate he had not lost his revolutionary fervor. Klar talked of "completing the defeat" of capitalism "and opening the door for a different future."

Koehler, a conservative, has been considering Klar's bid for clemency as Germany prepares to mark the 30th anniversary of the "German Autumn" of 1977, in which the Red Army Faction left a trail of dead as it fought to bring down a state it viewed as a capitalist oppressor. The terrorist group killed 34 people before declaring itself disbanded in 1998.

Koehler's office added that he also rejected a separate clemency bid from Birgit Hogefeld, another former Red Army Faction member who was convicted of murder in the 1985 bombing of a U.S. Air Force base in Germany, and of attempted murder in a failed attack on Hans Tietmeyer, then a Finance Ministry official, in 1988.

Hogefeld was convicted in 1996 after the judge at her trial said testimony had shown that she lured U.S. Army Spc. Edward Pimental out of a disco near Mainz the night of Aug. 7, 1985, to obtain his military ID. He was later found dead of a shot to the head in nearby woods.

The bombers used Pimental's ID card to get a car packed with more than 500 pounds of explosives onto the Rhine-Main Air Base as people were arriving for work the next morning. Two Americans were killed in the bombing.

Hogefeld is serving a life sentence."

Two Al Qaeda Leaders, Three Terrorists Killed; 39 Detained in Iraq: "Coalition forces identified bodies of two al Qaeda leaders, killed three additional terrorists and nabbed 39 others during operations across Iraq recently, military officials said.

Coalition forces positively identified two more senior al Qaeda in Iraq leaders killed in the May 1 operation west of Taji that left Muharib Abdul Latif dead. One of the terrorists killed during the operation was positively identified as Sabah Hilal al-Shihawi, who reportedly was Latif’s religious advisor.

Another terrorist killed during the raid was Abu Ammar al-Masri. Intelligence reports indicate that he was a foreign fighter facilitating insurgent activity and infrastructure support for al Qaeda in Iraq.

Both terrorists were positively identified by associates at the site. In addition, Shihawi’s identity was positively verified in a photograph.

“We will not wait for these terrorists to strike; we will seek them out,” said Army Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, a Multinational Force Iraq spokesman. “This is what al Qaeda in Iraq members can expect when they target the Iraqi people and security forces that protect them.”"

SULTAN, in order to spite his wife Shahidabanu, who had recently separated from him, along with his friend raped and murdered his two-year-old daughter at Sayla town in Khambhalia taluka of Jamnagar district. Following Sultan's arrest on Sunday, the accused confessed to the crime.

According to case details, the two-year-old's dead body was recovered on April 25, two days after she went missing, from the outskirts of Sayla town.

Since Sultan had earlier threatened Shahidabanu to move in with him or face dire consequences, Shahidabanu grew suspicious when Sultan disappeared after the body was recovered. She then registered a case of rape and murder against her husband.

While the post-mortem report revealed the child was raped and strangulated to death, the police, which was on Sultan's trail, nabbed him.

Based on Sultan's statement, the police also arrested his accomplice Salim Modi. Police said that Sultan was agitated as his wife had moved to her parents place and refused to come back.

'Modi kidnapped the girl on April 23 when she was playing outside her house. The duo raped and then killed her. The body was thrown in deserted outskirt area,' said Jamnagar police."

Earlier he had already succeeded to draw attention to himself by saying, on International Women's Day, to Jyllands-Posten (that's right: the newspaper with the cartoons) that not only Muslim women, but all other women too, should wear a veil. Of course, this resulted in a lot of reactions, and as a matter of fact his remarks in Jyllands-Posten were the direct reason for the interview with Weekendavisen, where he repeated them once more and commented on them. He said for example that wearing the veil is a woman's duty to God, because that is what the Koran says. However, that doesn't mean that he thinks that a woman with a veil is a better person than a woman without a veil.

According to him the veil also serves as a signal: women with a veil are «not for sale». Moreover, the veil protects against rapes, he says: in the US for example, every half minute a woman is raped, and according to him that is because women continuously tempt men by going onto the streets without a veil. Maybe not all men have a problem to control themselves when they see a woman without a veil, and perhaps there is only a problem with five to ten per cent of the men, but he says that is nevertheless enough for all women to wear the veil."

The surprise morning release of the 38 sailors and marines ended a tense three-day standoff between the British government and a breakaway Lutheran militia group that controls large swaths of the notorious "Manure Triangle" region spanning Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Ian Rumpsworthy, the diminutive baby-faced former captive who won the hearts of millions as Britain's "Littlest Marine," embraced Pastor Duane Gunderson around the waist and emotionally thanked the insurgent Lutheran strongman for approving his release.

"I only hope I wasn't too much trouble for you sir," said Rumpsworthy, choking back tears. "If you are ever in Phlegmfordshire, I insist you do pop by for tea and scones."

The unxepected release spurred speculation in some quarters of a backroom 'quid pro quo' deal, which British Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett angrily denied.

"Her Majesty's Government has a strict policy never to negotiate with Midwestern extremists," she said. "We were as surprised as anyone by this turn of events, and the fact that Kum & Go has a new $1.99 12 pack weekend special on Bass is purely coincidental."

MISTAKE ON THE LAKE

The former captives' ordeal began Tuesday, when the British destroyer HMS Chamberlain was conducting joint training exercises with the US Navy at Great Lakes Naval Training Station on Lake Michigan, just north of Chicago. According to insurgent naval commander Chuck Sorenson, the vessel strayed into Lutheran territorial waters.

What is not in dispute is that the Chamberlain was quickly surrounded by a flotilla of up to a dozen blown Hemi bass boats and party pontoons. Captain Colin Puddeley radioed several frantic distress calls to the MoD Mobile Command Centre in Waukegan, but the staff was away at a mandatory diversity training seminar. Surrounded, the crew surrendered. The Chamberlain was scuttled, but not before insurgents ransacked its stores of weapons and porn DVDs.

"Fighting back was not an option," Puddeley explained after this morning's release. "These men were brandishing Leinenkugel and deer scent. Resistance would have ultimately led to anger, misunderstanding, and potential unpleasant confrontation."

When the initial unilateral get-tough approach stalled, Blair took his case to the United Nations. A British-sponsored resolution seeking trade sanctions against Iowa was defeated 3-2 in subcommittee by a coalition of Russia, Zimbabwe and North Dakota.

With diplomatic efforts at a standstill, Gunderson's insurgents ratcheted up pressure on the British government by releasing a series of videos of the captives under harrowing conditions. Played on a near continuous loop by the BBC, the videos showed laughing Marines playing pinball and ingesting pickled eggs and Pabst Blue Ribbon.

"COLD LAGER? FIENDS!" roared the headlines in the Daily Mirror, whose editorial called on the Blair administration to "do everything in its power, sign any agreement, to spare these brave lads from a beer worse than death."

Similar sentiments came from other Fleet Street papers, and by midweek polls showed British public opinion solidly behind unconditional surrender. Public pressure was also stoked by sympathy for Rumpsworthy and his equally lacrimose shipmate Penelope Snatchrott. A 21-year old unwed mother of six and the only female captive, Snatchrott tearfully told of how she "desparately missed my wonderful cat Binky." While giving Gunderson a pedicure with a Hy-Vee bag on her head, she also confessed that she had only joined the Royal Navy "for the water skiing and beauty school tuition."

Despite mounting UK national opinion for a brokered deal, Blair heeded the wishes of the Bush administration which warned that "Midwestern appeasement will only lead to more abductions and Jagermeistering." A key breakthrough came Thursday when US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi broke ranks with the White House and traveled to the region to press Gunderson for a captive release.

The visit was not without controversy. As a condition for meeting with Gunderson, Pelosi agreed to go on a tour of several Lutheran holy sites. Several right wing websites criticized Pelosi for participating in what they termed stage-managed insurgent propaganda, and were especially critical of Pelosi's decision to wear native garb while doing so. At the Hawkeye Downs Flea Market and Swap Meet in Cedar Rapids, Pelosi was photographed wearing the traditional highwater pleated Momjeans and satin Disneyjacket. Playing the nickle slots at Diamond Jo's Casino in Dubuque, she sported a Pantsuit and Frizzperm while puffing on a Merit Menthol. When Pelosi finally delivered her peace proposal to Gunderson at his compound, she announced, "Pastor Gunderson, the road to Decorah is the road to peace."

"Naw, I tink dat's Highway 52," replied Gunderson, who ordered Pelosi to don Snatchrott's grocery sack and act his personal ottoman while he read the proposal.

"Yah, my damn La-Z-Boy's busted," he explained.

"I am the most powerful woman in the world," added Pelosi, straining under Gunderson's dirt-caked workboots.

RAPPROACHMENT

It is unclear whether Pelosi's efforts sealed today's hostage release. Gunderson said only that "the Felco truck's here and I gotta go out and spread some anhydrous."

For the former captives London awaits, where they are expected to receive a hero's welcome. "The nation can be very proud of these fine seamen and marines," said MoD spokeman Hugh Wiltonshaft. "Under the most difficult circustances, after days of unrelenting pressure and a diet of microwave burritos, these lads only gave the enemy their names, ranks, serial numbers, troop deployment and positions, classified codes, and some spare change for scratch-off tickets. And, ummm... yes, I suppose there was the ship too."

Wiltonshaft said the former captives will undergo psychological evalution for signs of 'Sioux Falls Syndrome,' and would then be released for media appearances. Several of the 38 have already signed interview and book contracts, including Snatchrott, who will receive a reported £150,000 for her upcoming biography "Not Without My Binky." Most of the crew has signed on to appear as themselves in the upcoming 12-part BBC miniseries "Incident at Kenosha."

"I'm doing my own stunts!" said Rumpsworthy.

Some analysts believe the peaceful denoument to the crisis may signal a thaw in the icy relationship between the British government and Midwestern insurgents. To keep the peace momentum building, UK Schools Minister Clive Knobchester announced a new plan to integrate mandatory Midwest studies into the department's nationwide multicultural education program.

"This innovative curriculum will cover a wide spectrum of important Midwest-centric social and cultural issues," said Knobchester. Under the program, the Ministry will sponsor visiting scholars from Iowa and Indiana to tutor UK schoolchildren on various aspects of Midwestern culture, including pork tenderloins, Schnapps, and driving on the right side of the road.

The simple answer is no. There is no one singular, universal vision of Islam. There are divisions (sometimes radical) amongst groups who call themselves Muslims on a range of historical, ritualistic and hermeneutical issues. On the whole however, while there are a number of important differences among the predominant Muslim sects, there are also a great deal of consistency in approaches and beliefs. The predominant sects of Islam, obviously, share the common bond of holding the Qur'an as the core central text which guides worship. They also share, to varying degrees, adherence to the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) and common approaches to Islamic jurisprudence. I would argue that these similarities and common approaches are more significant, and hold greater implications, then do dissimilarities.


I believe that external factors, such as culture can have a positive (and of course negative) impact on how Islam is practiced in a particular country or region. Currently I am residing in Jakarta, Indonesia. The Islam that I have viewed thus far, while sharing many characteristics of Islam that is practiced in the Arab world, appears to be far more pluralistic and tolerant. There are Muslim liberal/reform movements here which have widespread support and there are a number of progressive fuqaha among the ulaema. That said there are strong radical elements which exist and thrive; however they do not appear to hold a stronghold in the main centres of Indonesia. Whether this "success" is a reflection of Islam itself or the culture of the Indonesian people is a separate question, which we may explore here. "

'We will not be in peace until we set our foot again in our
beloved al-Andalus,' al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb said on claiming
responsibility for an attack which killed at least 24 people in
Algiers on Wednesday.

Al-Andalus is the Moorish name for Spain, parts of which were
ruled by Muslims for about eight centuries until the last Moorish
bastion, Granada, succumbed to the Christian Reconquest in 1492.

Western Resistance: Denmark: Islamist Is Jailed For Inciting Terrorism: "Moroccan-born Said Mansour has been convicted today at Copenhagen City Court of inciting terrorism. He has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison, according to Reuters and DPA.

47 year old Said Mansour had been born in Morocco and came to Denmark in 1983, to be with his sister, who had married a man with Danish citizenship. He married a Danish national (a teacher) in 1984, and he now has four children. He became a Danish national in 1988. The court today did not make any rulings concerning the revoking of his citizenship.

Mansour lived in Copenhagen on welfare benefits amounting to $1,800 a month. He had been under investigation since 2004, and had been arrested on Thursday September 8, 2005

He was the first person to be charged under a 2002 anti-terrorism act which outlaws instigation of terrorism or giving advice to terrorists.

He had downloaded jihadist videos, including those of beheadings carried out terrorists, which he then burned onto CDs and DVDs and distributed. He said he had been a close friend of Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman, who was convicted of plotting the attack upon the World Trade Center on 26 February, 1993. According to Mansour, an account backed up by police, the blind sheikh stayed at his home in December 1990 and May 1991."
